PERSONAL PERCEPTION

Set Your Goal

There's a story about a dog that bragged about his running speed. One day he chased a rabbit, but failed to catch him. The other dogs ridiculed him. He answered: But remember, the rabbit was running for his life. He had a motive. I was just running for fun. If you're just working for fun or wages you'll never try as hard as if you're working for a deeper, longer goal.

More people fail through lack of purpose than from all other causes combined.

The truest shortcut to success is to set a Goal.

Ultimate Success Formula?

Man alone, of all God's creatures, can change himself for the better.

Anthony Robbins in his Personal Power II tape, says that the following are The Ultimate Success Formula:
  1. Know your outcome.
  2. Get yourself to take action by deciding to do so.
  3. Notice what you're getting from your actions.
  4. If what you're doing is not working, change your approach.
What is your view about this success formula?

Anyway, I find it very similar to Six Sigma phases of Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC).

Working Attitude

The richest reward from our work is not what we get out of it in wages, but what we become through it.

At the start of our career, what we learn is more important than what we earn. The best preparation for tomorrow is to do today's work supremely well.

One overlooked success technique: doing things in the order of their importance.

Be Patient

"The key to everything is patience. You get the chicken by hatching the egg, not by smashing it." - Arnold H. Glasgow

Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet - sometimes a fortune builder.

First try seldom wins great success.

No one ever fails. They just quit trying. Many of our greatest men tried and failed so often they decided to quit - but tried once more - and won.

What are you telling yourself and others?

"The casual, instantaneous nature of email and SMS has heightened the potential for misdirected communication and offenders can now achieve worldwide infamy at breakneck speed." - Source

I remembered reading a true story that happened during one of the Valentine's Day. It was about a lady that happened to read an SMS that was sent wrongly to her husband when he was taking his bath.

Well, anybody can get messed up in their lives, if they continue to take actions based on invalid assumptions. We must always avoid jumping to assumptions!

“Assumptions are the termites of relationships.” - Henry Winkler

“Begin challenging your own assumptions. Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in awhile, or the light won't come in.” - Alan Alda

Don't Make Assumptions. Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.” - Don Miguel Ruiz

"The way we communicate with others and with ourselves ultimately determines the quality of our lives." - Tony Robbins

Stephen R. Covey says, “We simply assume that the way we see things is the way they really are or the way they should be. And our attitudes and behaviors grow out of these assumptions.”

So let's remind ourselves that we mustn't assume anything seen or heard is the final truth. It is always better to validate and find out more first! What do you think?

Condition your mind for success

In some mysterious way the subconscious mind tends to actualize what we visualize. So, even when the roof is caving in, picture yourself as a giant success.

"To win a race, you must first win it in your mind."

“Great athletes train their minds as well as their bodies. There are various mental conditioning techniques many use when preparing for an event. Perhaps the best known technique is visualization, creating a mental image not only of the desired result (the gold medal, a new world record, a hole-in-one), but also of every move that will be taken en route to the ultimate goal.”

I had started another blog with this objective; that is to help you condition your mind using images or photos. For example, if you were to mimic this photo and you will feel like laughing. Try it!

Pay attention to your thinking

The higher a man goes the narrower becomes his thinking. Therefore, watch out.

Know Your Purpose In Life

"The tragedy of life is what dies inside a man while he lives." - Albert Schweitzer

Everything is created for a certain purpose.

A glass bottle is created to serve as a packaging container for wine, spirits, beverages, and personal care products. It is ridiculous if we were to use it as a hammer. A glass bottle will break into pieces if used wrongly as a hammer.

Your life too has its purpose. Without a firm idea and the purpose of life, one cannot live and would sooner destroy oneself pursuing wrong things in life.

“We have not come into the world to be numbered; we have been created for a purpose; for great things: to love and be loved.” - Mother Teresa of Calcutta

"The meaning of life is to give life meaning." - Ken Hudgins

Purpose is what gives life a meaning.” - Charles H. Perkhurst

“You come into the world with nothing, and the purpose of your life is to make something out of nothing” - Henry Louis Mencken

“The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” - Mitch Albom

“When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds:
  • Your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction, and you find yourself in a new, great, and wonderful world.
  • Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and your discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be.” - Patanjali
"Outstanding people have one thing in common: an absolute sense of mission." - Zig Ziglar

"Make your work to be in keeping with your purpose." - Leonardo da Vinci

What would you think of a person who used up all his life before finding out its purpose? Make very sure you have find out your purpose in life!

Develop Your Will Power

Have you seen the following videos from my Inspiring Videos blog?
After having seen the above videos, I believe you will agree with me that "Where there's a will, there's a way."

Too many develop every talent except the talent to use all other talents - Will power. In our every day tasks, we need will power to get things done. With it, many could overcome boredom, drudgery and obstacles. The most valuable education is that which trains us to do what should be done, when it should be done, whether we feel like it or not.

"Willpower is the key to success. Successful people strive no matter what they feel by applying their will to overcome apathy, doubt or fear." - Dan Millman

"People do not lack strength; they lack will." - Victor Hugo

"Willpower is the strength of mind to carry out one's goals." - Sandy Anderson

“The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.” - Confucius

An ounce of will power is worth a pound of knowledge. It takes guts to leave ruts. Successful men acquire the will power to make themselves do what success demands. They do the things failures don't like to do or can't make themselves do.

"There are dozens of success traits; but will power is the tool that builds them all. To develop will power or discipline, do one useful thing every day for no other reason than that you don't feel like doing it. In my 40 years of studying psychology, that's the best exercise I've found for developing will power" - the method of Wm. James, Harvard psychologist.

Well, what ways do you employ to strengthen your will power?

The Right Perspective

We must learn to sees things in the right perspective.

For centuries, even great scientists strongly believed that the sun revolved around the earth. During that time, people thought that they are right seeing the sun rose in the east and set in the west, not knowing that they are seeing with the wrong perspective.

Perspective is not what we see, but the way we see it. We could either fail to see the forest for the trees, or forget that the forest is indeed made up of many trees if we don’t see things in the right perspective.

"There are always three sides to every story: your side, the other side, and the truth." - Anonymous

"If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail." - Abraham H. Maslow

Let's take a look at this story:

Who is Rich and Who is Poor?
One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live.

They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked his son. "How was the trip?" "It was great, Dad." "Did you see how poor people live?" the father asked. "Oh yeah," said the son. "So, tell me, what you learned from the trip?" asked the father.

The son answered: "I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them."

The boy's father was speechless. Then his son added, "Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are."

(Source: Internet; Author Unknown)

Isn't perspective a wonderful thing? It makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don't have.

“You must look within for value, but must look beyond for perspective.” - Denis Waitley

"For many men, the acquisition of wealth does not end their troubles, it only changes them." - Seneca

Let's remember to appreciate every single thing you have, especially your friends! Do you agree?

  • The Value of Struggle

Most people think that by having an easy life without difficulties or problems is good. Indeed, who wants a tough life? But what struggle, be it physical or mental is necessary to make us grow stronger in body and mind.

“Where there is no struggle, there is no strength.” - Oprah Winfrey

I am who I am because of the struggle that I had experienced during my younger days. I came from a very poor family. Thus, my parent has to work day and night to meet our daily needs. Without much guidance in the area of education, I did very badly and hence I do not have a good foundation in my education. I only started to do well in my studies when I reach high school. Partly because of this, I always take self-improvement very seriously and know that I need to guide my children in their studies as well.

The bible tell us in Romans 5:3-4
"Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."

"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome." - Anne Bradstreet

Let's take a look at this story:

A man found a cocoon of an emperor moth. He took it home so that he could watch the moth come out of the cocoon.

On the day a small opening appeared, he sat and watched the moth for several hours as the moth struggled to force the body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther. It just seemed to be stuck.

Then the man, in his kindness, decided to help the moth, so he took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The moth then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the moth because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time. Neither happened! In fact, the little moth spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.

What the man in his kindness and haste did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the moth to get through the tiny opening was the way of forcing fluid from the body of the moth into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon. Freedom and flight would only come after the struggle. By depriving the moth of a struggle, he deprived the moth of health.

    (Source: Internet; Author Unknown)

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we were to go through our life without any obstacles, we would be crippled. So instead of cursing and swearing, understand that they are part of the making of a better you.

    Elephant's mentality

Have you seen at the circus, huge elephants got tied to a tiny rod in the ground?

Well, when the elephants are still young, they get tied up with a very huge rope. All day long, the elephants tried to get rid of it. But they can't. Finally, the elephants give up. From that moment on, they strongly believe that there is absolutely no chance to get rid of the rope. They accepted the fact that the rope limits them. That's why, they can be tied with extremely small ropes in the circus!

Likewise, we could also have many limiting beliefs, which comes from legacies, other people's opinions or even our own fears. These causes us not able:
    • to live our lives to the fullest
    • to be successful as we could be
    • to set and reach higher goals
    • to fulfill our true dreams and desires, etc.
